About Us

In December 2018 I broke my left ankle riding my bike on steep, muddy trails at Ute Valley Park in Colorado Springs.  At the time of the injury I thought it was a sprain but after five minutes of waiting for the pain to go away I realized it was more serious.  I limped out 1.5 miles with the help of a very nice elderly gentleman as it was getting dark and cold.  When I got home the swelling was huge so I knew I had broken my ankle.  My mother-in-law came over that evening and loaned me some crutches.  After some x-rays I confirmed I fractured my tibia so they put me in a cast for a few weeks.

The problem with crutches is you can’t use your hands, especially in the kitchen, which left me feeling helpless and dependent on my wife and kids for the simplest of things. (like carrying a plate of spaghetti to the table). I didn’t even know knee scooters existed until someone mentioned that I should get one. I ended up looking online to buy a knee scooter but the cheapest I could find was over $150 and delivery was going to take 3-4 days. I decided I didn’t want to spend the money if I’d only need to use it for a month so I looked on Facebook and Craigslist for a used knee scooter but what little I found became frustrating very quickly. I’d contact sellers and they’d either ignore me or they’d tell me it was already sold. I finally found a lady selling a knee scooter in Denver and we set a time to meet. It was 60 miles away and my poor wife had to take off work and drive me because I couldn’t operate my manual transmission with the boot on my left foot. We didn’t want to wait for the scooter to be sold – it was literally a drop everything and get in the car type of situation. When we finally arrived at her house I rang her door bell and guess what happened (drum roll please)… she wasn’t even home! I’d been on these crutches for 3 weeks by this point so I got back in the car, got on Amazon, and bought that $150 knee scooter on the spot – still parked in front of her house.

Funny story isn’t it? But wait, there’s more. By the time the knee scooter arrived I only ended up using it for 3 weeks before I was able to walk in my boot. I didn’t want a knee scooter sitting in my garage collecting dust so I posted an ad to sell my “like new” 3 week old knee scooter and guess what happened? It took 3 months of wasted time for me to eventually sell the knee scooter for $75, a 50% loss on my investment.

Why didn’t I just buy or rent one from the start? I felt so stupid and my wife confirmed this with the smirk on her face. So the idea popped into my head – why not rent knee scooters to other people, for cheap, so they don’t have the deal with this problem? In the meantime we could teach our two boys some useful life skills like customer service, using tools to repair scooters, marketing and finance – and we’d have a little extra money to pay for their college. That’s how Knee Scooters for College was born. In the end it was a good learning experience.

You don’t have to repeat my story and you don’t have to buy one for $150 or rent one from a medical supply company that charges $100/month plus a $100 deposit. Just rent from us and we promise you won’t have this problem yourself. We make it affordable and super easy for you, the boys help out, and everyone wins. Just say NO to drugs and crutches!
